Resume Writing & Job Interviewing Workshop prepares high school students for successful futures!

Resume Writing and Effective Interview Skills:

Pilibos Students learn how to effectively highlight their knowledge, experiences, and abilities on their resumes and during interviews.

Striving for academic excellence is a daily part of students’ lives at Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian School.  Students K-12 are offered opportunities to increase their knowledge, expand their minds, and excel in everything they do. This past month, Pilibos offered its 11^th and 12^th graders an additional opportunity that will benefit them in the real world setting.

The Juniors and Seniors were immersed in a week long workshop that taught them skills and best-practices for writing effective resumes and improving their interview skills.  Students were asked where they saw themselves in five years; ten years; and what they considered obstacles that they needed to overcome in order to get there.  With this in mind, workshop coordinators, Ms. Kierstin Cabalka and Ms. Talin Mardirosian guided students through the Dos and Don’ts of writing a resume, how to stand out in a crowd and get noticed, and how to best market themselves to prospective employers and volunteer agencies.

Once through the resume writing process, students were then given some insight into how to prepare for an interview.  Important tips like, researching the company you are applying to, wearing professional attire to the interview, preparing questions for the interviewer, etc. were all highlighted.  Most of all, being confident and leaving a good impression was the main lesson taught to students.

Once students were taught the basics, they were asked to write their own resumes as if they were applying for a position as a tutor at a tutoring company.  On the last day of the week long workshop, students came to school dressed in their interview attire and took part in mock interviews.  Students were rated on their level of confidence, eye-contact, preparedness, and the quality of their resumes.

After the intense interview process, students were given feedback and encouraged to continue working on their resumes and interview skills.  All the students were very excited to take part in such an important lesson, one that is often times overlooked.  In today’s competitive job market, effective resumes and interview skills can open up a variety of opportunities.  It is Pilibos’ goal to provide as much preparation, reinforcement, and inspiration as possible for our students to truly excel in all that they do!
