JSA Fall State Conference

On the weekend of November 14-15, the Pilibos Junior States of America met with representatives of public and private schools throughout Southern California, for the Los Angeles Regional Fall State Conference. Despite an enrollment that puts Pilibos as one of the smallest high schools present, our group of 51 students was one of the largest chapters at Fall State! Our scholars, grades 9-12, spent the weekend listening to, and participating in, debates, thought talks, and discussions of current events and other important subjects that concern all Americans today.

Led by the club’s officers, Armine Kalbakian (President), Angelica Gevoglanian (Vice President), Arpi Beshlikian (Treasurer), and Lily Dermendjian (Secretary), the Pilibos chapter made itself well known at the JSA conference. Following up on last year’s very successful debate on the Armenian Genocide by Armine Kalbakian, the students gave subsequent speeches and moderated debates. Assisted by cabinet members Maria Discigrikyan, Vana Babikian, and Sako Koseyan, the officers had spent time in club meetings preparing the students for speaking and moderating at the debates in Fall State. It is the goal of Pilibos JSA to continue to teach students how to formally debate and become young activists in their communities.

At Pilibos, we aim to inspire students to not be afraid to share their opinions and master the art of public speaking. Pilibos JSA is the ideal platform for students to engage in their own growth and achievement. This year, Pilibos JSA welcomed many new students as participants at the Convention who not only enjoyed their time engaging in politics at the weekend convention, but also are making plans to speak at the next event! Pilibos has proven to be strong and active competitors at the JSA conventions and we expect to see more success from our fellow students.
